Beverley Taylor Sorenson Art Program

About Our Program
The Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program provides arts-integrated instruction to elementary students, effectively increasing student performance in every subject. BTS Arts puts specialists trained in visual art, dance, music and theatre in elementary schools to develop lesson plans that incorporate art. The Utah State Board of Education administers the program statewide, and collaborates with administrators and university staff from Brigham Young University, Dixie State University, Southern Utah University, University of Utah, Utah State University, Weber State University, and Westminster College.

Beverley Taylor Sorenson was instrumental in reinvigorating elementary arts education in Utah. She worked with area schools and led the effort to ensure Utah children have a complete and well-rounded education. Beverley’s mission began when she recognized the severe lack of resources for teacher training in the arts and the lack of legislative funding for school-based arts programs. Through Beverley’s driving influence, arts education in Utah received a significant boost when the Utah State Legislature funded the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program, which supports teacher training at colleges and universities all over the state. The program also pays for arts supplies, equipment and materials, and supports ongoing research to ensure quality implementation and results. Beverley’s inspired work continues to impact thousands of bright young minds to this day.
Carin Linker - BTS Music

I am so excited to be a Beverly Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program Music Educator!  The program is specially funded through the Utah Legislature to provide students access to a certified music teacher.  I am certified in both music and English as literature is my second love.

I have taught music in the elementary setting for ten years.  I LOVE integrating subjects like reading, history, and science into music concepts.  Academic vocabulary is vital in increasing student comprehension in all areas.   My goals for students include being tuneful, beautiful, and artful!

A typical class might include expressive movement, small group music theory practice, large ensemble instrument playing, or solo practice.  I also enjoy reinforcing concepts found in the core classroom such as:  summary, inference, problem/solution, root words and suffixes and prefixes, and number value.  One of my favorite questions to hear from students is “Why?”  Igniting a spark of curiosity often leads to a life-long love of learning.

I am a Utah native but have spent 15 years in Texas before moving back to UT in 2017.  I’m happy to be back in the mountains and fresh air!  I graduated with my bachelors degree in Music (Organ Performance) from Lubbock Christian University and went on to receive my Masters in Interdisciplinary Studies (Secondary Education, English, and History) from Texas Tech University.  Go Red Raiders!

I play the organ, piano, harpsichord, guitar, dulcimer, and I am working on learning the accordion!  I have served as a church musician and done freelance work for many years.

I have four boys who keep me very busy (ages 8-21) and I’m excited to have them grow up in the area I did.

Disney Animator Michael Woodside is doing daily YouTube videos of how to draw Disney Characters- he is funny and entertaining.  He also gives you a glimpse of what it is like to work as an animator for Disney.  I haven’t put and YouTube links on my website because students cannot access them with their devices.  However, this would be a great opportunity as a whole family!  My sister in law draws everyday with her kindergartener and 5th grader to his draw along videos.  They are loving it!

I am so fortunate to teach children! and teaching them music is joyful. We learn to sing in tune while playing singing games; play the beat and rhythm on instruments; listen, dance and move to Classical music; folk dance; learn to read and notate music; learn about composers; to be kind and respectful; and integrate language arts, social studies, math and science.
