Steps to Obtaining a Driver's License
OBTAIN A LEARNER’S PERMIT:
  • Pass the 50-question learner’s permit test. Learner’s permit testing is no longer offered at Deer Creek High School. Students must take the learner’s permit test at a Utah Driver License Division (DLD) office.
  • The Driver Handbook and practice tests for the learner’s permit can be found on the Utah Driver License Division website: https://dld.utah.gov/
  • Heber City Driver License Division: 69 North 600 West, Heber City (hours: Mon–Fri, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; phone: 801-965-4437)
  • Must be at least 15 years old
  • Documentation you will need at the DLD: birth certificate, Social Security card, and two forms of proof of address
  • Cost: $19.00 (pays for 3 attempts at the written test)
  • Must hold the learner’s permit for a minimum of 6 months
  • Learner’s permit is valid for 18 months
  • After obtaining a learner’s permit, students should practice driving with a parent, guardian, or other responsible adult for a total of 40 hours, including at least 10 hours of nighttime driving.

BEHIND THE WHEEL (BTW) INSTRUCTION & SKILLS/ROAD TEST
  • Students must have completed a minimum of 30 of the required 40 hours of driving practice before enrolling in Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) instruction with an instructor.
  • To sign up for Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) instruction, go to: wasatchdriversed.com
  • BTW instruction cost: $120
  • Instructors: Mr. Clint Kelley and Mr. Stanton Akana
  • BTW instruction is offered before school, after school, on select Saturdays, and throughout the summer. All BTW scheduling and registration is completed through wasatchdriversed.com.
  • Complete 6 hours of Behind-the-Wheel instruction with an instructor.
  • Skills/road tests are to be completed at the Utah Driver License Division (DLD). To schedule a skills/road test, go to: dld.utah.gov
 
TRAFFIC SAFETY AND TRENDS EXAM
  • Pass the Traffic Safety and Trends Exam with a score of 100%.
  • A valid learner’s permit number is required to take the exam.

  • Question: I’m an online (or home school) Drivers Ed student, how do I sign up to drive/take the road test with an instructor?
  • Answer: Go to schoolcashonline.com  and pay the $120 driving fee.  Email the receipt to Mr. Clint Kelly: clint.kelley@wasatch.edu.  You will then receive an email response with your assigned driving instructor.  The instructor will then contact you about a driving schedule.
  • Question: How do I sign up for Online Driver’s Ed?
  • Answer: Email Mr. Theron Gustafson:  theron.gustafson@wasatch.edu for the application and instructions.
  • Question: Do I have to finish driving/road test before the end of the class/semester?
  • Answer: No.  Students have until the end of the summer after they have graduated to complete the driving/road test.
  • Question: Where do I go to take the “Online Safety and Trends Exam”?
  • Answer: https://secure.utah.gov/dlexams/
  • Question: My permit is about to expire.  Where do I go to renew it?
  • Answer: The Heber City DLD located at 69 North 600 West
  • Question: I need to take the permit test to get my learners permit.  Where can I take it?
  • Answer:  SCHOOL MONTHS:  after school on Mondays in Mr. Clint Kelley’s classroom (rm. 604).  SUMMER MONTHS: at the DLD.
  • Question: What can I study for the permit test?
  • Answer: You can get a handbook online found at https://dld.utah.gov/wp- content/uploads/sites/17/2020/03/Final-Driver-Handbook-2020-V.1.pdf  Also, there are many apps and online practice exams.  Search for “Utah driving permit test”.
  • Question: When can I take Drivers Ed
  • Answer: Ask your assigned Counselor, he/she knows the cutoff dates for which semester.
