{"id":1120,"date":"2022-08-25T17:32:18","date_gmt":"2022-08-25T17:32:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wasatch.edu\/deercreek\/?page_id=1120"},"modified":"2026-09-16T15:28:26","modified_gmt":"2026-09-16T15:28:26","slug":"excel-time","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wasatch.edu\/deercreek\/excel-time\/","title":{"rendered":"SOAR Time"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-page\" data-elementor-id=\"1120\" class=\"elementor elementor-1120\" data-elementor-post-type=\"page\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-22a3b79 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"22a3b79\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-0323022\" data-id=\"0323022\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-95bacb3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"95bacb3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong style=\"background-color: transparent; color: #333333; font-family: 'Merriweather Sans', sans-serif;\">What is SOAR Time?<\/strong><span style=\"background-color: transparent; color: #333333; font-family: 'Merriweather Sans', sans-serif;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">SOAR Time is a revised program here at DCHS that will allow teachers to reteach and help those students who have not mastered the essential skills of a particular course.&nbsp; And, while some students will be requested to work with specific teachers, others will be able to choose from an offering of academic enrichments.&nbsp; Every student will have a place to go during SOAR time, and every student is required to attend.&nbsp; (Our SOAR Time program at DCHS is similar to our previous Tutorial program as well as the intervention programs at the two middle schools in our district \u2013 Stretch Time at RMMS and Shield Time at TMS.)&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"padding: 17px 0px 24px; margin: 0px; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: none; border-left: 0px;\">\n<div style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\">\n<p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding: 10px 0px;\"><strong>Why are we doing SOAR Time?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>There are some things that every student needs to know before leaving DCHS.&nbsp; And, while class time does allow for teaching, learning, and enrichment, we know not every student masters a concept the first time.&nbsp; There needs to be additional time built into the schedule to reteach the essentials.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>This system is research-based.&nbsp; High schools across the country run a similar intervention model with great success, so we know this will be a good thing for WHS students.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding: 10px 0px;\"><strong>What will the new schedule be?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>SOAR Time will take place Tuesday through Friday after 1st period.&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #e9bf00;\"><span style=\"cursor: pointer;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wasatch.edu\/deercreek\/bell-schedule-2022-23\/\">SOAR Time Bell Schedule<\/a><\/span><\/span>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding: 10px 0px;\"><strong>What is a \u201cSOAR Session\u201d?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>\u201cSessions\u201d are the classes students will attend during SOAR Time.&nbsp; Sessions will be 29 minutes long and will be offered on a range of subjects.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding: 10px 0px;\"><strong>What is the difference between a closed and open session?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>Closed Sessions are specifically for those students who were previously assigned to attend.&nbsp; Teachers determine the information covered in a Closed Session, and they also determine which students need to be there.&nbsp; Only assigned students can attend a Closed Session.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Closed Sessions might cover subjects like independent vs. dependent variables in science, prepping for the English section of&nbsp;the ACT, solving systems in Math 1, etc.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Open Sessions are open to any student that was not previously assigned to a Closed Session. (Note: Some Open Sessions, due to safety reasons and students needing to know how to work with specific equipment, might be limited to students enrolled in specific courses, ie: Open Sessions held in the wood shop or metal shop.)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Open Sessions might&nbsp;cover subjects like advanced weight training extension, civics text make-up, learning history through film, etc.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding: 10px 0px;\"><strong>How will students be assigned to&nbsp;Closed Sessions?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>Teachers will assign students to Closed Sessions based on a student\u2019s performance in their class and whether or not they have mastered specific skills and standards.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>All students will receive an email on Monday afternoon requesting them to either closed sessions or allowing them to schedule open sessions.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding: 10px 0px;\"><strong>How will students register for&nbsp;Open Sessions?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If a student is not requested for a Closed session on one or both days for that week, they will see a link in their email allowing them to choose the open session(s) they will attend.<\/li>\n<li>These sessions are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. As sessions fill, they will drop off the list of available Open Sessions.<\/li>\n<li>Time will be given at the end of third period each Tuesday to encourage each student to register for Open Sessions. These classes are merely a place to record attendance and are named that way to avoid confusion since SOAR Time is not held everyday.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding: 10px 0px;\"><strong>Is SOAR Time mandatory for Seniors?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>Yes, participation in SOAR Time is expected for all students who have a class scheduled for 2nd period.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding: 10px 0px;\"><strong>Is there a grade attached to SOAR Time Sessions?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>No, there are no grades attached specifically to SOAR Time Sessions, but students will receive UAs for this course according to the <a style=\"cursor: pointer; color: #e9bf00;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wasatch.edu\/site\/Default.aspx?PageID=8137\" target=\"\">school attendance policy<\/a>.
